I just picked up 2 new Metzeler ME 880's for a price I couldn't refuse even though I won't need them until next summer (2008). 
I'm storing them uncovered on top of a shelf in my garage just under the ceiling in an upright position. This means that ultra violet light, which apparently is the #1 no-no for tires won't be an issue.
Does anybody know any other tricks of the trade to properly store tires for a year and a half?? ie. storing them upright vs. laying down, store temperature etc.
Any input is appreciated.
