Howdy & Welcome. I keep a battery tender on mine, and keep it covered outside. Mine starts fairly quick. Have you tested the battery, and the charging system?

Hi All,
Recently purchased my first Shadow, a 99 spirit. It looks great, but is having some difficulty starting in the winter here ( Just above freezing temperatures ). People have been telling me that it should start within 2 turns of the starter motor... Well it sometimes takes more then 3 tries and about 10 turns (sometimes it does not even give a full turn, but a rattling noise).
People at the garage tell me it might be the acid battery that is not giving enough Volts due to the cold, and I should consider putting in a (lithium?) battery.
Does this sound logical at all?

Mine is covered also, no battery tender though. The battery is new and the charging system is also functioning as it should.

Welcome to the forum, start by having your battery load tested, here in the states most automotive parts stores can load test them. If you have to go with a new battery i would shuggest an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat)instead of a lead acid.

One more question though, since I do not have the booklet anymore that comes with my bike I am struggling to find the dimensions and Ah's the bike needs.

Since the battery seems to hold it's charge correctly, and is charging the way it should. I think the amps are too low on the installed battery. I tried to see what it reads on the installed battery, but it is hard to see without removing it (and since I have this alarm installed... removing the battery is quite a task.

How old is the battery? Did you run a multimeter on it to see what it is putting out? Are all the other electrical components involved ok?Thanks for the tip guys.

I wouldn't get too exotic with a 16 year old bike. Go with a sealed wet cell or AGM. The LI batteries are lighter, but have other drawbacks. You may have to alter your charging system on the bike to match the requirements of the LI, among other things. Good luck with the bike, hope it is just an old battery that needs replacing and nothing more.
The battery does not look new anymore, the bike came with it, so no idea to figure that out.

The battery that is in it now is a: HYB16A-AB. That tells me it is a 16Ah battery.
This website suggests I get an YTZ14-S (but that is 11.2Ah) is that problem, or should I just get an type 51913 / 51814 or MGS12-18

Amp hours are not as important as CCA, cold cranking amps. 200 or better is what I recommend.
YTZ14-S will be just fine. For a battery tender see if you can find this in Amsterdam.

Thanks for all the help. Just ordered me a Yuasa YTZ14S and a tecmate OptiMate 4 tender.
