I love riding my new 87 700. I rode 30 years ago in high school on a friend's Honda 400? that we used to just share and leave at each others houses. Anyway, newbie question: Is it better for the bike to down shift or brake to slow down or both? ;)

Welcome! I have always prefered to downshift to slow any vehicle with a manual transmission. Not sure why, never really thought much about it. I do know that the habit has resulted in long lasting brake materials. You are sure to get some more informed opinions here though.

Welcome. I downshift before breaking sounds better and you have to get back to first gear either way might as well use the engine to help slow the bike.
