In case y'all didn't get a chance to read my last post. I'm from Texas and I just recently got my first motorcycle albeit with a few little issues :/. Anyway, that'll come in the near future to get the machine running great.

Now back to topic, I would like to see what y'all's opinions were on taking a motorcycle driving course? If I am not mistaken, I believe in Texas we can either do a written test and take a driving test with the DMV department or simply get everything written off by taking a driving course for the Class M license. Any benefit to doing one or the other besides the cost of course?

I think Texas requires a written test and a road test for licensing requirements.
No requirements on how to ride safely.

The MSF course teaches you how to operate a motorcycle, the best protective clothing to wear, how to avoid dangerous situations and, what's most important, how to get out of those dangerous situations you can't avoid.

In other words it provides you with a sound foundation too make you a better motorcycle rider through experience.

Also welcome to the Forum.

If you are new to riding a bike on the street, I would suggest the MSF Course, for all the reasons Mike just stated..

Firm believer in MSF course

I did my course in November the MSF instructors were helpful and professional. Above all I learned the basics of motorcycle handling as it should be learned. And I am still doing the exercises for skill sharpening. I plan on taking some of the advanced courses when available.

Thanks for all the replies!
I am getting the notion that taking the course will be a good investment in the long run. As of now, I'm just learning from youtube and just riding around my neighborhood lol. But yes, I do think I will take the course even if I do feel a little comfortable riding around now. There's always something new we can take away.

Youtube.... thats where they show you to ride standing on the seat.

My Opinion: Depends on your REAL recent riding experience.
Ive ridden ages of 14-28(road & racing), 32-38 (road), 50-53/now (road). Retook it at 50 already having M class.
I like the statement, ************* take the course.
Plus I think part of the non-helmet law needs it. Some one can clarify that part.

Take the course. It is designed to get you enough basic information that you can operated the motorcycle. You will by no means be an expert and ti achieve any level of skill you'll need to get out on your own and practice, practice, practice. A great deal of the course is devoted to safety and information that will keep you out of trouble. When I took the course here in Maine it cost about $275. Best $275 I ever spent!

the safety course is a requirement here in FL, but i do not regret dropping the 240 even for a second

i already taught myself how to ride prior so i was a bit ahead of the curve in the class, but i did learn a few things, and i had fun hanging out with a bunch of people and bikes.

bikes are more fun in a group, even if it is a group of learners theres still a bit of comradery.
do it.

I just completed the course this last Sunday. Instead of being like getting a root canal, it was actually fun, I learned an amazing amount and I can't wait to take the bike bonding course in a few weeks. It was taught in an effective way, plenty of humor, low stress exercises that build to some really useful techniques that might just save your life. Take it. You won't regret it.

I grew up riding bikes starting with mini bikes. I considered myself an experienced rider. I still took the beginner riders course in PA where I lived at the time. Even though I had been riding for years, I learned things. I tell everyone...take the course!! You won't regret it. Plus you can get a discount on insurance!

Were moving to Florida in a couple of months where the course isnt free, so Im glad Im taking the course and getting my license now. Its free here in Pa, plus, like op posted, when you pass the class you automatically get your license, no need to go test at dmv. I like this because I think well be much more confident taking the test with the instructors who taught us over someone weve never met etc.
