The petcock on my gas tank has a leak from the bottom. Can I use a replacement that doesn't have the vacuum line? If not how hard to rebuild are they?

You have a vacuum line connected to your petcock.

What bike do you have? @xxxxxxxclm1954, the vacuum line wouldn't actually pull fuel, it would just open and close the petcock.

IIRC he has an '85 VT500 which has a vacuum operated petcock.

Yea that's what I was wondering if it would be a problem to replace it with a petcock that doesn't use the vacuum line like the one he linked

The petcock still has an off selection but yes it more or less shuts itself off when you kill the bike and has enough vacuum from cranking to open it back up

Do you suppose the petcock issue could be the cause of the stumbling at 2000-2500 rpm that you posted in the other thread? You may kill two stones with one bird.

It is a possibility. So I guess it is alright to close the vacuum ports and use a replacement petcock? Or rebuild the one I have?

Replace with the same you have or rebuild. Unless you want to continue playing guessing games trying to figure out what you have goin' on. The manual and most peoples' general knowledge covers oem, not a cobbled up mess.

You can find rebuild kits on eBay as well as most major parts sites.
I have never had to rebuild mine. I always leave it in the "ON" position and the vacuum on/off works just fine.
