Hi everyone,
Just bought 1986 Honda shadow VT1100C and started rebuilding it, this is my 3rd bike in a row Im rebuilding in 3 years.
Have few questions if someone knows for sure please let me know, If you are not sure PLEASE don't add more confusion to my situation.
1. Are 1985-86 models use one common diaphragm on the air cut off valve and all the post 1987 two diaphragm ?
2. Are the diaphragms the same of all SHADOWA Vt1100 for all years? (3cm diameter)
3. Are brake master cylinder and clutch master cylinder on 1986 VT 1100 compatible with some other models (I'm struggling to find rebuild kits, but there are plenty for Honda VF VT700 on the web...but would they fit?)
4. What are the good after market brands for honda spare parts, I see there are TOUR MAX, K&L parts out there but can they be trusted because Honda genuine parts seems expensive to me.
5. Where I can find good internet parts catalogue ?

My 86 VT700C has two diaphragms. So double check that. Get yourself a shop manual. Easily found on ebay. Sourcing parts is hit or miss. Avoid cheap Chinese parts like the plague. Caltric is utter junk. Ebay was a good source. And there are others. Good Luck

Several youtube clips say that the carbs on the 1100 are similar to the 700, but don't take my word for it.
As @Derek86VT700C says the 700 is dual carb so you have 2 of each.
I'm waiting for 2 diaphragms and I've also ordered 2 full sets including the diaphragm and the metal piston. These were advertised as for the 83-85 models but the pics and dimensions for the diaphragm are the same so I can't be sure it will fit.

Ok, after a lot of reading on the web, I have decided to delete the air cut off valve, (my diafragm is holed), this model acv is separate unit from the carburator, what I have to plug? And what will be the out come of doing this ...anyone?

Nissin is a name I remember from my first days with my Kawasaki G4TR... Their parts should be OEM quality.

I have an 86 VT1100
Be sure to unplug and jnspect the 3 wire plastic connector that joins the stator 3 wires into the main harness.
The wires are very tight and constant power thru them can lead to many problems
Every bike with 3 wire stator needs to inspect and repair.
Dealer called the new conector and wire The Goldwing Update Kit
So yea, its a known problem

Some melt the connector, bike runs off and on. Or runs bad or not at all.
Could catch fire!
Inspect for plug damage or wire melting

No, the 1986 - 88 are special and stuff from a 750 or other years won't fit in the carbs.
It's a parts nightmare; I have one. Good luck.

Yes, I have realized that it's a parts nightmare the first two weeks after I have bought it.
Anyway, the brake master cylinder part number 45530-MG8-6 seems to fit only vt1100 85-86 and it's difficult to find ...any aftermarket or compatibility ideas guys??

Check this clutch master kit. It lists a lot of years and models. If I remember correctly the bore is 16 MM. So if you can find similar it should work.

The problem I'm running into now, and I expected that will be the other way around is that I can find clutch master cylinder rebuild kit as it fits plenty of models, the ******* is the FRONT BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER 45530-MG8-671 only fits models:
VT1100C SHADOW 1100 1985 (F) USA CALIFORNIA
VT1100C SHADOW 1100 1986 (G) USA CALIFORNIA

...and to add more confusion I contacted these guys here in the UK and they told me that their part (see bellow) fits 85-86 models and plenty others Hondas, Kawasaki , Suzuki Yamaha with 15.8mm x 41.6mm Brake Master Cylinder

I may be simple minded and missing something, but I'm sure it must be used in more than just 2 California spec. bikes, IME Honda does not work that way and Cali bikes just vary by emissions stuff tacked on. That is a common enough piece if you can't find OEM on ebay and OEM parts availability seems really messed up by COVID-19 at the present time, then check out the aftermarket such as K&L.

When I choose 1986 it gives me this number 45530-MG8-671 only fits models:

I don't have a Service Manual copy for that one.
If you do, it might be worth taking a look at the service limit wear on the piston assembly across the years and seeing if there is a difference there compared to the one you have.
It wouldn't be the first time that a part has multiple part numbers for the same thing and Honda isn't much good in pursuing possible substitutions for older bikes. )-:

I guess worst case scenario is grabbing another year pre-owned master cylinder from the recyclers that matches the appearance of the one you have and rebuilding that with the more commonly available set.
