I have a 2007 spirit, chain drive, that I am looking to change out my front wheel for a smaller 17" model. I know that the ace model wheels are interchangeable because they also use the speedo sensor on the front wheel. I can't seem to find an ace wheel anywhere. Locally, there is an aero wheel for sale, which uses the shaft drive to effect the speedo. Does anyone know if the speedo gear from my spirit would fit on the wheel/hub of an aero wheel? Any information would be helpful. I have scoured this site and many other to assist and everyone recommends an ace wheel, which would be ideal, but there are none locally, and none on eBay that are in working order.
Thanks you!

Not that i would want to do it again, but you can buy a new rim and spokes and relace your hub to that. Any reason you want a smaller rim?

I am going for a smaller front wheel to be able to put a larger (wider) size tire in the front. Ideally giving it the look of the "48" after I black out some more of the front end parts. There is a 120/70-19 that would work, but that would be he widest I could go.

hard to say "Yes"

The "48" look would be cool, but...

Some of this depends on the specific year of the wheel you want to use. You may be able to "flip" the aero front wheel so that the brake disc is on the correct side, but many details will be hard to know until you actually try putting the wheel on. Looks like the aero uses two distance collars (one presumably to replace the spacing of the speedo gear). Axles are different, but brake discs look to be the same.

I've done a couple successful swaps on VT1100 where no mods (other than new tires) were needed even using different wheel sizes. Sabre 1100, ACE 1100, and Tourer will interchange without mods.

The good news is that someone will eventually want the aero wheel if it doesn't work. Please keep us informed on what happens.
