18mm thin wall socket.

If there isn't one in you tool kit you can buy them from bike bandit or partsfish.com a 98 VT1100 C has the tool you will need in the kit, if you need a bike to enter for parts look up, and I believe Sears may carry them.

Try an 18mm 12 point socket instead of a 6 point.

The 12 points are thinner wall and generally will fit.

I just did my bike last week....looked all over for the right socket.

Sears had an 18mm SPARK PLUG socket that fit perfectly and I did not have to remove the seat.

At Sears the regular 18mm SPARK PLUG socket fits fine. It also holds onto the plug for that long pull out out...

i found that the tool in the tool kit works the best, especially for the rear plug. i had trouble getting the socket wrench in there. with the honda tool, you don't need to take off the seat or the tank. the honda socket has a flat wrench that turns the socket, you just ned to take the side cover off and move a few hoses. way easier.
