Hi all. I thoroughly enjoy this site, and the helpful attitude of the members! With that disclaimer I'd like to ask your opinion about a new sprocket and chain with the specific details of my bike thrown in. I've read the many posts on here about this subject, but would like your thoughts on my situation.

It's a 2003 750 ACE, with 18000 kms / 11500 miles on it. My motivation is to reduce the rpm's at highway speeds. I've been thinking about the 39t or 38t sprocket.

1) at this mileage, do I need a new chain as well? I still have adjustment left.
2) do I need a new front sprocket?
3) Is removing a link from the chain as safe as simply buying a new one?
4) Where's the best place right now to buy said sprocket and chain?

1.) Yes, if this is your original chain then I would probably replace when replacing sprocket. Ill fitting chain might fit great on worn sprocket but not quite right on the new one..causing premature wear.

2.) Nah. I had a 2001 ACE running the 38T rear and never changed front. I went 55K with that setup.

3.) Removing a link is safe. It is likely with your new chain that you will have to remove some links to get the proper fit. I used to get deals on 120 link chains but they were always long so I would remove links and master link it all together. Remember to put master link pin holder facing the direction of chain travel.

4.) I always got mine from here. http://www.sprocketspecialists.com/. The chains I used to buy from a buddy in my office that sold parts on the side.

Hi, I think a 39tooth sprocket would be right for you, It will lower the rpms quite abit. Once you go past 39 you have to shorten the chain, but 39 on the stock chain is fine.

1)I would, It's probably starting to get wore now.

2)Same as above, It's about $20 for the front sprocket, So you might as well change it. If the front sprocket's teeth are starting to curl then it should be replaced, because if you buy a new chain it will wear that new chain out pretty good and quick, That is the reason most people just replace them all.

3) If your going to 39, no shortening needed. All you have to do to shorten a chain is take a grinder and grind the sides of a link off and you've shortened it.

4) I got my Sprockets from Bikebandit.com, They are made by JT Sprockets and cost about $70-$80 with shipping (Nova Scotia here, shouldn't be that much more to ship to you up there :) , But with the weather lately whats the hurry...) They ship very fast, I got mine within a week. My chain I got off ebay for around $70. Here's a link for the sprockets

Just scroll down they'll be there.
