We can get better roads going through the same areas. That stretch from G to 148 is better than anything on that stretch of 221. (Paulie, Violette and I went from Floyd to Mt Airy by taking 221 to 52 back in June.)

rickbb is (?) working on a 3-NC-State-Parks-and-BRP route that looks like it might be really good for Saturday with Mount Airy as the lunch stop. (Italian?)

He should be looking at a Virginia route that I sent him that has some good stretches that I've driven (in a car) and some recommendations from http://www.motorcycleroads.com/ -- Friday's ride?

Possible Sat route, 168 miles total, 4 1/2 hours with no stops figured in. I only get about 120 miles without a gas stop so we would have to make at least one.

This puts us at TJ's Zesty Itailian in Mt. Airy, (stop #16), after the noon rush. Prolly around 2ish. Unless we stop lots on the Parkway, etc.

Goes out of Hillsville on some back roads to the BRP, down the BRP to NC 18 and in the back way to Stone Mt. State Park, (stop #9), then the back way to Pilot Mt. State Park, (stop #14). After a short ride to the top and looking at the view on to the resturant for a late lunch and a short jaunt up old US52 up the Mt back to Hillsville.

Mostly off the main roads, and more than a few twisties thrown in.

Disregard the other stop markers, only way to make the map program keep me off the super slab.

Here's a suggestion for Friday, nice short one, only a 100 miles. 3 1/2 hrs with no stops figured in.

I have no idea about lunch, haven't been on most of these roads in years and years. Will be nice to see whats new here.

Stop #12 is the Shot Tower Historic Site, settlers made lead shot for defense during the French and Indian war here. Used lead from nearby Lead Mine, (it's a town and mine or it used to be anyway).

We could also cut out the 52 part and come back down 94 instead as Art had suggested. Supposed to be a VA senic route.

Some comments:
o Looks like you've got us heading to the BRP on Forest Oak Rd. Know it? How does it compare to Joy Ranch Rd?

o The stretch of 21 down to the Elkin area could maybe use some improvement. Head up through Zephyr and then back down to 268?

o Sticking in this little diversion (hitting a stretch of Squirrel Spur Rd that I want to ride)

in place of your #17 would spice up the ride quite nicely, I think. Adds about 20 miles/30 minutes and skips a boring part of US52. That would have us pretty well maxed out, especially if we do any walking around Mt Airy's festival.

OK, I've had every intension to ride up to the area and check out these routes, but, life happens.

Between my job sending me to hell and back every other week, loss of my ride buddy to a broken ankle, family bs, and general lazyness on my part combined with a strong desire to just kick back and down a cold one when I am here, I just haven't gotten round to it.

Soooo, we'll just have to wing it.

Not a problem Rick, go have yourself another cold one and chill. See you in a couple of weeks.

My wife wants to bring a couple of bottles of wine on our trip. I'm not thrilled with the idea -- not, of course, because I don't like wine. (We have done it before on shorter jaunts.) So I went looking for alternatives that might satisfy and found these:

http://www.thedogs.com/
http://www.purplefeetgalax.com/
http://www.villaappalaccia.com/index.htm
https://www.roundpeak.com/

Now I'm looking at how close the suggested rides might get.

Further to the above, here is my planned Friday ride:

It starts out going through Galax (Purple Feet, third on the above list, is there but won't be open if the ride starts before 9:45 AM), covers VA16 (the north-south stretch below #7), has a lunch stop in Wytheville (location TBD but shown as #9) and stops at the first winery in the list above (#11) and New River Trail State Park (#12 -- mentioned above by rickbb as the shot tower). The way I've got it planned, it will be 174 miles. A 9 AM departure should result in a 4PM return to the hotel.

If the West Wind Winery is disappointing, I'll probably be looking for dinner in/around Galax (maybe Galax Smokehouse -- reviews) so a pre-dinner stop at Purple Feet can be easy.

Sounds like a plan to me. I also like wine and plan to bring a Virginia bottle for your wife to try.

Fantastic. As long as you don't expect me to be bringing wine stems, anyway. (I generally prefer them but will NOT be packing any for the trip.)
