Temp warning light out

1016 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  jpr1968
My 1999 Honda shadow VT1100 temp warning light is not coming on when I first turn key on, the oil pressure @ kick stand light working fine. Are their numerous things it could be due to or is the bulb the best place? I guess this is a dumb question but I need to make three posts. Thanks.

It's not supposed to come on with the key. It ONLY comes on when the bike overheats.
It is supposed to come on with key is first turned on, that's how you know it is working.
No, it doesn't come on. Did it ever come on for you? There is no self test on any of the lights on your bike. Oil pressure light comes on with the key because there is no oil pressure until bike is running and same goes for the side stand, the light will be on because the sidestand is down.
Okay let me try explaining again, maybe I was not clear enough. Before I start bike when I first turn key on I believe temp light should come on like kickstand and oil pressure light do which are right beside it, it does not.

Never mind, looks like you were right, after reading manual, temp light should only come on if their is a problem. I apparently wrongly assumed it should come on when you first turn key on before starting engine. Thanks for setting me straight.
jpr1968 is correct.

Friendly bunch of riders here, who know these machines.
all three of my lights come on when I first turn the key on.
all three of my lights come on when I first turn the key on.
I would suggest you take another look. Temp light should not come on.
I really believe that like you bike does all 3 should come on when key is first turned on before starting, as a way to make sure warning lights are working. I am going to do more checking.
It may be different for other years, but in the gen from 1997 - 2007, it does not come on, as JPR says. You may think it should come on, and maybe that would make sense, but it does not. Just the way it is.

You're just wasting your time. The temp light ONLY comes on when it over heats.
