The story weather true or not bike sat outside. Guy got it from uncle that had health issues. Says it runs great. Its half apart because he was getting ready to paint it after getting it running right. I am a mechanic by trade so I ain't sceered. Says he changed all fluids and replaced plugs and wires. Also the fuel pump was replaced to get it running. He has side covers and the seat. Seat is split but no big there. For that price if he fires it up and it runs right and goes through the gears I am going to get it. Also dude says he is in the middle of a divorce and needs cash.

Please, take it from a guy who has dragged several cars from the field to the road over the years...

NEVER.....EVER....EVER.....inherit someone else's project they have given up on and expect it to be "A GOOD DEAL".

It's not.

FYI - "A GOOD DEAL" refers to Post #2 in this thread. Didn't see your response later on. If you go into it with that mentality, you'll be fine.

Go for it

I'd also be inclined to go for it. You said you're looking for a project bike. If it runs, and your a mechanic then you get to build what you like.

I'm doing my fourth re-build in four winters and I'm having lots of fun. I tear mine down to the nub and re-build anyway, so I don't need shiney parts to start with. Having ALL the parts there and a running bike is good, however.

I hope you get inspired and build the baddest VTX this side of the Pecos (I don't really know where the Pecos are though)

I don't know pricing on these bikes, but it can't hurt to throw an offer. I imagine it's hard to sell a bike in pieces this time of year.

Can't speak for anywhere else, but around here a VTX1800 with low miles in excellent condition is a $4500 to $5500 bike all day. Since they are all fuel injected, year doesn't seem to matter as much as spec/trim level and mileage. Nice bikes...I would like to own one ;). This particular bike is probably worth the money if it runs well, you are handy enough to fix anything wrong yourself (including rust and paint) all the parts are there. You have to figure your going to do tires and battery at a minimum to get it roadworthy. That's $500 right there. Then there's fluids and filters and plugs etc. jwinkler has it right though...you need to know what to look for if you are considering taking on someone else's project, and expect surprises. (the ones they didn't mention to you)
