Hi All! So the tires on my '96 vlx600 are worn out. I have some used tires in very good condition taken off of an '83 shadow 750 parts bike that I bought a while back. The rim sizes are the same, but the tire sizes are different. I'm wondering if the difference is negligible or not.

Tires on the '96:

Front: 100/90/19
Rear: 170/80/15

Would it be ok to use these off the '83?:

Front: 110/90/19
Rear: 140/90/15

If it was a car, I'd just do it as the aspect ratio seems to make little difference in handling. However, since handling is a life or death deal on a bike, I want to make sure I won't be doing something horribly wrong.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Front won't be an issue to use, but the rear will be too small to be safe, IMO. (if you can even get it to mount properly on your rim, being 30mm smaller in the width)

Front will be 1/2 inch wider.

Rear will be 1 1/2 inch narrower, and little taller.

Actually, the rear will also be shorter, not taller. 140 * .90 = 126mm sidewall height, which is shorter by 10mm (almost 1/2-inch) than the stock 170/80 tires (which are 136mm sidewall height). This will put the rear nearly a full inch shorter in overall height (thus reduction in circumference).

This is why I said it would not be a good idea, IMO, to try the smaller rear tire from the '83. Sure, it may fit and work in a pinch, but may not be "safe" or stable. For the prices of tires these days, you can get a decent rear tire for <$100, in the "right size".

Better yet how old are the tires?

Size differences:

100/90/19 = 26.090 dia.
110/90/19 = 26.800 dia.

170/80/15 = 25.710 dia.
140/90/15 = 24.920 dia.
