I finally stared at my 05 VLX long enough to realize that I could mount the Shindengen MOSFET R/R with the terminals facing up. It mounts perfectly in the stock location, although it is thinner than the stock R/R. I just added a couple of washers and a lock washer before securing the MOSFET with the stock cap nuts. The only real modification necessary is the left side cover needs to be contoured with a Dremel tool to fit properly where the front bottom if the cover hits the R/R.

The terminals, which are heavy-duty, are pretty well sealed with rubber stoppers that come with the kit, but I also put some di-electric grease on all of the terminals, just in case, and I really don't ride in the rain anyway. I was getting 12.7-13.2v before; I am now getting 14.2v. It's probably a placebo effect, but the bike seems a bit peppier now.
