ok, here's some suggestions:
the 83-85' vt750/700 shocks are 12.5" long
the 86-88' vt700/800 shocks are 13" long
looking at the fiche diagrams, any of these look like they would work. I actually have a pair of vt800 shocks that have been cut down to about 11.5 or 12" if you are interested.
Also, progressive doesn't list any shocks for the vt500 but JP Cycles claims that there are 13 and 13.5" progs that will fit:

Finally, you could cut your own shock coils.
