I made me a jumper cable set which plugs into my battery tender lead. I just let it sit for a while so the battery gets a little charge then it cranks right up.

We were taught at class to always use it so it's become a habit

I think the key off is the best practice on a street bike. Always be aware for emergencies to always hit the kill switch since you can kill it with your hands still on the bars.
