As I'm a new rider to the northern climates... I was wondering what tips you might offer. I don't plan to ride in ice and snow but I do want to take advantage of clear dry roads. How harmful might salt residue be to the bike?

Welcome to the madhouse ;)

IF you wash your Bike upon returning home and remove the salt residue, you should be OK...

You'll be fine. just wash the bike often if you ride on wet and salty roads.

I ride all winter and its more of a game of just picking dry roads to ride and staying warm. good gloves, a windproof jacket, layers, and some sort of wind protection on the bike.
