One of these days I've got to at least try out an HD, just to see what the hype is all about. I think the whole negative stigma has to be just that, there's no way a manufacturer could've stayed a float this long by producing a poor product, even with a strong image.
Once you ride a hardley , you'll know why women love them .... 1 was enough for me ...
Quickly went back to my Honda .. 2 Shadow Areos in my stables .... Never again on the other ...

Let's compare some "fully depreciated" examples of each make:

1996 HD Sportster 1200 S, MSRP $7360, Current Value $3-5K in my area. (57% of original)
1996 Honda Shadow 1100 ACE, MSRP $9499, Current Value $2500-$3800 in my area. (33% of original)
( I got my '96 Shadow 1100 ACE for $1250 with less than 19,000 miles)

I'm of the opinion that Harleys get ridden more, and accumulate more miles, but still retain more of their value at the lowest point on the valuation curve, than Hondas, although both are plentiful and neither is rare. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing depends on whether one is selling or buying, but it is a thing.

Another thing that is real, but people don't much talk about, is the APPRECIATION side of the value curve.

I think the bottom inflection point is out about 25-30 years for motorcycles, but this is the idea. They don't keep going continuously down in value, each model has a floor value, based on various factors including rarity and desirability.

I bought my first Honda, a '70 CB450 in 1980 for $450. Now, people are asking well over 10X that much for a nice one.
 
I had both a 1998 Harley sportster 883
and my 1996 Honda shadow 1100 at the same time and I kept the Honda and I sold the Harley.

However I liked the Harley, and I especially felt that it should be more reliable as an air cooled engine compared to my liquid cooled Honda. Several more potential points of failure are in the liquid cooled system.
