So I finally got my hydraulic adjuster from partzilla and am about to install cylinder head and cover. Reading through the fsm (87-96) I see this note
NOTE
On the rear cylinder , install the camshaft pulse generator onto the cylinder head cover prior to installing the cam sprocket cover.
Well, I don't remember removing one of those! I looked at the disassemble instructions and don't see anything about it there. Am I supposed to have one? What does it look like?

The older bikes don't have them. If you didn't take one off then there are none. That would be for later models with more timing advance control. So they have a sensor on the cam gear to tell the control unit cylinder and cam position.

OOOOOOPPPs sorry for the misinformation. But he should see whatever was removed and wiring for it I would think. And the Service manual said rear cylinder. So now I am totally confused as to which is #1 cylinder? Maybe you can straighten this out better.

Lots of parts do from 85- (some are the same for the 83VT700) but 87-96 are pretty much the same, That note relates to the 85/86 engine.
