Did you measure the distance of the cam chain tensioner projection, as described in the manual? The spec is 9mm or more - then replace a chain.

In the later model VT1100 engines, the tensioner is shown as a roller (metal, I assume.) I wouldn't expect this to crumble with age, as some of the earlier posts suggest. Perhaps only the newer engines have this "upgrade?" If the measurement shows that chain wear is within spec, you shouldn't need to replace a chain. Certainly, chains like these, which are constantly bathed in oil, should last more than your 35,000 mi. (Or is that 35,000 Km?) And for the newer engines, the Honda manual suggests that the chains will wear out BEFORE the tensioners will.

In my limited experience with cam chain noise, it could be heard at idle rpms, with the bike stationary. And manual adjustment cured it. But that was an old CB450.

If you pull a tensioner, could you post a picture? I think some of us would like to see its physical condition and design. Thanks.
