I was considering buying the mac exhaust kit and jetting the carb. I noticed that there are only 83-85 jet kits for the VT700. Is it possible to use this kit or is there another kit out there. Also, any experience with the mac system, good , bad? I really new to this site so I apologize if this is a dumb question.

I'm definitely NOT one of the experts on this subject but I'll tell you what I know. I'm currently in the process of sourcing a main needle valve to replace a broken one on my 86 VT700C. That part is discontinued so one of the alternative ideas was just to rejet the carbs. I looked on the Dynajet web site and didn't see anything listed for the 86 so I emailed them. Their reply told me that they do not offer a jet kit for the 1986 VT700C. He did not specifically tell me that I couldn't use a kit for a different year but I figure if it was possible, a guy from the sales department would probably say so.

Also, I have learned over the past few weeks that the carb on the 86 is different from the carb on the 85 and the 87. The parts, at least the ones I care about like the main needles and jets, are not interchangeable with the OEM parts for the surrounding years.

But as I said, there are many people here with far more expertise in this area than I have. I would very much like to be wrong and read that you found an aftermarket jet kit for our carbs. That way I'll have a plan B if the needle on it's way to me from a salvage yard turns out to be the wrong needle.

Good Luck,

They don't make a jet kit for this bike, but if you want to open it up a bit, the main jet is a #112, and the slow jet is a #42 (I think.)

The "poor man's jet kit" would suggest you replace the main with a 115, and the slow jet with a #44 (If it's a #42 to begin with.) Keep the stock needle. it's not as good as a Dynojet variable-taper needle, but it's good enough.

These numbers should be close enough, but depending on the exact characteristics of your intake and exhaust, you could tune them a bit more. Also, open your idle jets to 3.25 turns, if you haven't already.

Knowing that the carbs are such a bear to get off this bike, the amount of tuning that you decide to do may be limited!
