98' ACE 750 Smoking after rejet

I just recently purchased a 98' Honda Shadow 750 ACE and it was slightly smoking out of the rear cylinder at idle and low speeds. The guy told me it only started smoking after they had the carburetors rejetted. The front cylinder does not smoke at all. So I have the carburetors off of it now and one carb had a 106 main jet and the other had a 110 main jet. The rear cylinder carb is the one with the 110 jet. Aren't both of the main jets supposed to be the same or am I mistaken. Both of the pilot (low speed) jets are the same. Should I put a 106 jet in the rear carb and see how that does or just leave it alone. The bike runs fine besides the smoke. It doesn't spit or sputter it just pops a little when you are let off the throttle. Anyone have any ideas? Also this is my first post on this forum but have been reading on here for a while and I appreciate all the great information that is on here. Thanks to everyone.

The rear cylinder generally runs a little hotter since its coolant (and air flow) comes from the front cylinder. If both jets were the same, the rear cylinder would be running too lean. The rear cylinder is usually a few jet sizes larger.

Other bikes (like my 1986 Shadow), however, have split paths for the coolant. This means that the two cylinders should run very close to the same temperature, and both jets are the same size.

If your bike has a crossover pipe for the coolant between the jugs, your rear cylinder and front cylinder will usually have different jets, with the rear just a littler larger.

Thanks for all the information. The smoke looks white to me which led me to believe that it was burning oil but like I said I just went for the jets first because the guy told me it didn't start smoking until after the rejet. So what else could be the problem? Like I said it is running fine not skipping or missing any just the smoke. Any suggestions as to how I could fix the problem would be great. thanks again.

Does the white smoke smell sweet, like burned sugar?

Check your coolant level. (Both in the overflow jug and in the radiator itself. Engine cold, of course.)

White smoke, is sometimes coolant. If you're losing coolant, that's a bad thing, since it is often a bad head gasket or cracked cylinder wall.

How much white smoke? A little puff, or a smokescreen cloud?

Does the smoke only happen when it's cold, or does it do it when it's all warmed up too? I ask because that white smoke could just be water vapor. Picture your car running on a cold winter morning.... When the bike was rejetted, more fuel goes into it, so more water vapor out. My bike does that. One pipe smokes more than the other also. The pipes are different lengths, so more vapor makes it out of one than the other.

Best to figure out what it is before you ride too much more, in case it's a mechanical problem.

I guess the smoke could be vapor. When I first bought the bike it didn't hardly ever smoke but when I was riding down through the city the other day (25-30mph and many stoplights) I noticed it smoking a little more while sitting at the stoplights. Still not pouring smoke but just noticed it coming out of the tailpipe and blowing in front of me. I will check the coolant in the overflow and the radiator tonight. Also if it was a blown headgasket wouldn't the oil have looked milky when I changed it last week? Just wondering. Thanks again

It would depend on where the leak was if the oil would get water in it just like it depends on where it at to get water in the cylinder, if it is leaking compression into the coolant you will see air bubbles at the radiator fill neck with the cap off. If it is leaking into the cooling system the engine will probably have to come out, I'm not sure but I don't think you can pull the heads while it's in the bike.

Ok so I cleaned everything on the carburetors and put it back together. Everything went together fine and I also adjusted the idle screws to 3 and 1/4 turns out. The bike still runs good but still idles too high and smokes a little. I have turned the throttle stop all the way out until it is just barely touching the throttle valve and it is still idling too high. Also I noticed while listening to the bike that the front cylinder sounded like it was hitting harder than the rear. The rear sounded kind of raspy. The bike has drag pipes on it but shouldn't both cylinders sound basically the same?

There's an adjuster at the twist throttle make sure it's has a 1/16 free play, make sure all the cables have free play, by now your carbs have to be out of adjustment so you need to get that done, as far as the pipes sounding the same IF both were the same length and IF the carbs were adjusted the same they would sound pretty close,,,other wise no.
