i have a 2003 750 honda shadow and today had some problems with it..

the last few times i rode i noticed the start button took a few tries to turn the bike over(it wasnt doing anything at all for a few pushes). and tyhen today i shut it off and when i turned the key back on it had no power at all. i jump started it but it was back firing and idleing irregularly and the lights were going from bright to dim to bright etc...

i was guessing it was something with a stater or battery but was looking for some expert advice. thank you for your help

Definately sounds like an electrical problem. Start with the battery and connections.
If that's good, check th stator and regulator.

If the fluctuating voltage was doing this at idle, sounds like a bad power connection somewhere, or a bad ground.

Start with the battery and connections.
And if that looks good.......then check it again.

Taken all together, your symptoms clearly indicate a VERY low battery voltage condition which could be from a bad battery or a bad main cable connection.

Won't be able to test the charging system until you get a good, fully charged battery in place.

Clean the starter switch, the light voltage runs through it and if the contacts get dirty what is happening to you is what happens. You may have to file/sand the points, a nail file work good, put some grease on the points, it will help stop corrosion. Take your time taking it apart, look before you pull just in case the spring has come loose, I doubt it be do it anyhow.

It was probably a bad battery which may be a bad charging system. And...depends on how you jump started the bike. If you jump started the bike with a car or truck with the engine on, you definitely destroyed your battery. I bet you that battery went from a 12 volt battery into a 6 volt battery. That is why it was idling and running irregularly. Hopefully...you didn't destroy your charging system running the bike that way. Otherwise, just get a new battery and it takes care of that 6 volt issue.

Bad information; bad advice; just plain wrong.

There are several reasons not to jump a small battery from a much higher capacity system that is charging but ruining the battery is NOT one of them.

Any 12 V. system can be "jumped" from any other 12 V. system of equal or larger size and it will NOT damage a battery that is not already bad.

Other charging system components might be damaged but not the battery itself.

This sounds like a starter switch problem and can be cured easily enough with the rattlebars link in Useful Links...

This sounds like a bad connection... check all your battery connections for clean and tight...
IF you have a charging problem, the Electrosprt link (in useful links) will guide you through the testing proceedures...

Good Luck...

I was having problems like this, I metered my battery and it was bad so I changed it. Worked fine til battery died again, so I charged it and started it again to only have my main fuse blow which means bigger problem then battery. I got bike home, put new fuse in, started bike and it ran til bike warmed up and it blew again this time I smell burning electric. Put my nose to use and did a bike sniff down to find my rectifier had gone bad and was burnt. Replaced it and no more problems. Hope this helps but put meter on bike and see if your readings are right for stator too.
