Clutch Rebuild Part 2

Well, this morning I got into the clutch on my '93 VT1100. The clutch in my bike is NOTHING like the clutch described in the Haynes manual, as it doesn't have any pressure plate bolts.

To get it all apart, I took out the snap rings, and removed the stake from the center nut, but do NOT have the necessary socket to take the center nut off to remove the clutch basket. I checked Service Honda's web site to find out if there is a special tool necessary and can't see anything. It looks like a 25mm nut, with square slots cut in it. There must be a special socket needed to remove this part???? Does anyone know what the special socket is and how I would get my hands on one????

Thanks in advance,

Ron,

Thanks for the info. I called the dealer in Lake Placid and found a socket available from Tucker for around $13.00, but it'll be next week before I can get it and actually get this all fixed.

Glad (for me) to see this post, sad to see you are having to replace the clutch assembly.

What were the symptoms of your Shadow?

What engine do you have, VT1100C?. The '99 Aero I am riding and repairing is a VT1100C3 and it will eventually need a clutch since it slips while shifting during harder acceleration. Other than that it does not seem to slip during regular cruising.

Are you using the stock replacement for this repair? Are there aftermarket clutch assembly's that are preferred?

Good luck and keep us up to date on your repair.

Apologies for the confusion Tom, but that linky is to his biz. I'm Kevin.

Anyhow, I don't believe a conventional socket will work (I could be mistaken as I haven't peeked inside a case in a while). I prefer to improvise when I can, but I broke down and bought one for repairs on a '94 model. The links below are to pics I took of it.

Mostly, the clutch was engaging way at the end of the lever stroke. Some times it would 'slip' a little at engagement.

My VT1100C engine is different than those used later. Mine is coupled to a four speed tranny. The Clutch does NOT have the four bolts on the top of the clutch stack. To get at the clutch you take off a large and small snap ring and pull the cover off to find a single nut that must be removed to pull out the clutch stack.

I looked for 'aftermarket' clutches, and ended up with the factory parts, just for the ease of getting them from the dealer here in town. The same dealer that couldn't find the the wrench I need to take it apart. I called a dealer in a nearby town and ordered the wrench (socket) from them.

The nut is found in the parts document as a 24mm, and if I HAD to, I could find a socket of the correct size and then grind away at it to come up with the same thing I can buy. If I had the time, and the bulk of my tools at home, I could do this, but I work as a mechanic and my tools are all at the shop on the ranch where I'm a mechanic/welder.

Even with a 4-speed and a slipping clutch it is still a nice looking Shadow.

Do your local dealer a favor and sell them the tool they could not find. That might wake them up to start providing customer service at a higher level.

Thanks, I like the way it looks in the photo. Problem is, it's my regular ride to and from work, and it doesn't look that nice just now. I just don't get out to polish the chrome the way I used to.

As for the 4 speed, I love it! The darn bike pulls so strong, that you never hit high gear until 60mph and you don't have to fool around shifting it like I did my last few bikes. Second and third around town, and when you hit 60 headed out of town, hook up into the high gear and put your feet up on the crash bar and cruise....

wrench size

Hey, could anyone out there who ones the honda lock nut wrench let me know what the internal diameter is on that wrench? I am talking about the wrench used to remove the lock nut holding in the clutch backet on a 1996 vt1100c. it is part number 07916-4220000.

I have found places to buy the part, but no one has any specs on it, and I was hoping to buy the motionpro oil filter and clutch hub spanner, but that is only a 24mm wrench, and i am worried it is too small.
thanks
