Here is the deal. `83 750 Shadow. My bike has always been hard to cold start but it always started. I had to clean them out due to crap getting sucked threw the air box. So now I have everything back together except for the air filter I had to order. I'm working on getting the carbs dialed in, and when its running it runs awesome! However, to get it running I have to jump it because it will crank until the battery is dead. I've tried all manor of pilot screw adjustments, choke settings, cranks on the throttle to prime it and to no avail. Once the bike has started once and gotten warm I can kill it and fire it right back up often with only 2 or 3 turns of the starter. I have a new battery, plugs replaced a few months ago, fresh gas. I don't know where else to go here. Should I get hotter plugs? could the air filter be causing me to lose too much vacuum that its not starting?

I assume this means the carbs?
If you are not running an air cleaner, that is the most likely cause for your hard starting. All shadows are very picky about air intake and exhaust back pressure. Try restricting the air flow a bit with a rag or similar. If the bike starts OK, you've found your problem. Good luck, keep us posted.

It seems that air flow is not my problem. I'm thinking its an electrical issue. I get ok spark from each plug. All my manual suggested ohm checks came back within spec. However, how much voltage should I have at my coils. My battery reads 12.3 volts with the ignition tunred on but at the coils I read 0 before crankng, 3-4 while cranking, then when I stop cranking it jumps to about 7 for a half second then goes back to 0. I did, by some blessing get the bike started and the coils were reading 1.5 volts. This doesn't seem right to me. Some one shine so light on this for me. I'm at witts end and the wife is at witts end with me ;-)

This might be a long shot but next time you try to start it hook jumper cables to your car(not running of course) and see if it starts any better.

First of last season I tried to start mine and it killed the battery before it started. Hooked up cables and it fired right off. New battery and problem solved.

Have you tried no throttle at all? Our choke works from suction when the throttle plates are closed.

It may also be possible if your bike has the idle set higher than normal, this may be reducing the amound of choke available.
