If you look further down the page, opening weekend looks like Memorial Day weekend. If that's the OPENING weekend, I can't imagine it would be a pleasant ride. Maybe 4th of July?

yeah im thinking I may have to push the trip back that's not that big of a deal. I just more want to know the road better from locals

also how do the bikes run up there? will it even run at all or will it be stalling from being so high up in the air?

is gas a problem as well?

Is it worth it to ride 3500 miles to ride up Mt Evans and back??? If that's your question, probably not. But is it worth riding to Colorado and tour the state??? Heck Yes!!!! Colorado has some gorgeous roads to cruise and an incredible amount of sites to see. Mt. Evans is just an up and back road with some pretty nice views, pretty much like Pikes Peak. Both mountains have numerous switchbacks to keep even the most seasoned riders challenged. beyond these two mountains though, there is also HWY 34 that winds through the Rocky Mountain National Park. It links Granby with Greely, two pretty picturesque towns to visit. Portions of it sits on huge concrete pillars that rise out of a curvy mountain river. Farther south in the state is Royal Gorge State park with some pretty incredible sites and no visit to Colorado is complete without a visit to the Indian cliff dwellings.

If you've been everywhere, then sure... a trip up and down Mount Evans just so you can say you've ridden on the highest paved road in the US would be kind of cool. A week or two riding throughout the state of Colorado though should be on every riders dream list though.
My .02 anyway.

I'll 3d Squid and Fatty.

Trail Ridge Road is located in Rocky Mountain National Park and is the highest continuous road in the US...ie, it takes you across the Continental Divide not just up and down. It's typically closed from Labor Day to Memorial Day due to snow.

There are great roads throughout the state....don't overlook SW Colorado. Ouray to
Durango is just one example. Go onlne and you'll be od'd on options.

Yep, if you're coming out there is much to see. As mentioned, 34, Trail Ridge, etc. I also like Poudre Canyon, 7, and 36. At elevation you will notice a power drop for sure. As for gas if you mean finding stations, it shouldn't be an issue. If you're like me and paranoid you can fill up every 100 miles or so. If you decide to come out and are riding through or near the park, let me know.

Not before May :p Weather is too unpredictable. Even if you want to try for March/April, you could end up out there and get a spring blizzard drop 6 feet of snow on you.

Lots of good roads and awesome places to go to make a trip worthwhile. The whole state is beautiful (minus the northeast corner, which is basically just an extension of Kansas/Nebraska).

The bike will run fine, might be a bit sluggish at the top, but it wont just stall out.

And the twisties can be far more fun (and terrifying) than anything on the Dragon, or those other "Motorcycle" roads out east.

Early May can be a gamble up in elevation but it beats the early tourists that start showing up in June. Me, I'd go in late May. Of all the states I've visited (46), Colorado is one of my favorites for 2 wheeled cruising.

I lived in Colorado Springs for 9 years and as others have said, weather can be unpredictable any time of year. We got snowed out of a golf tournament memorial day weekend once. Have seen snow in September once or twice. Afternoon hail storms are not uncommon in May and June. That being said it is beautiful country with many great places to ride. If you are prepared for some potentially wacky weather you will have a great time.

May definitly not due to snow and runoff from it + with all mentioned previously. July would be the best and it still can be pretty brisk temp. wise. Plan on ascending about 11:00 am from gate. This will allow the best amount time to usually avoid any bad weather. $10 @ the gate. Awesome ride/drive to the summit. Be sure to adjust your air screws on the carbs.

Rode up Mt. Evans on the 4th of July weekend several years ago and damn near froze my butt off in cold wind, fog and rain. Lots of nice routes in CO, and many of them are pretty close together, so you can choose a central jump-off point (wife and I were camping in Manitou Springs, IIRC) and do day trips out of there.

While you are in the state, though, you ought to think about renting an ATV or jeep to do some great backcountry routes like Imogene and/or Engineer Passes near Ouray. DO NOT ATTEMPT on your bike.
