Wow! This is a fun thread!
Now can't we all just get along?
This is almost as bad as the gear or no gear debate!
People will learn the hard way no matter what.
That's how experience and common sense is learned.

I agree with canyon by the way as far as it being MY STALL, Stay the hell away! But that's just me. I'm not a very sociable person in public, and I don't care for strangers.
I put too much time and money into my ride to have some jack@$$ park too close and damage it.

Just Sayin...........

At work, those of us who ride usually fit between 2 and 4 bikes to a parking space...except for the civilian dillhole that takes up an entire parking space on purpose with his Road Glide. We usually park all around him anyway, lol!

When I go to the px, I usually park in the striped-sections at the end of the lane, and sneer at the handicapped who give me dirty looks because I park closer than they do.

I don't mind sharing a spot. If you want your own spot make sure you park where another bike can't fit in. I figure bikes are more visible and less likely to be messed with when they are together in a parking lot. The thing that bothers me the most in a parking lot is someone who has to take up multiple spots so someone can't ding their doors. If they are that concerned about their car they should park at the end where no body will be around it and take as many spots as they can. I don't mind the striped spots but I have seen people pull large trailers up to the front for some reason and they may take out anything in those areas. I pull a 35 ft 5th wheel camper but when I pull into a parking lot I stay at the end to where I have an easy way out. I have had someone park right behind my 5th wheel before when I was at the end of the lot so I wouldn't be in the way and have an easy out. I nearly backed into it before I could see it. Behind my camper is a terrible place to be in a parking lot.

When I use a paralell parking spot I leave room fer other Bikes in the same space by "backing to the curb"...
When I park in an angled space, I leave room fer other Bikes...
When I park in a "squared" space I do the same...
When we ride in a group we share spaces, 3 or 4 bikes per...
I parked on the sidewalk one time in Tullahoma Tennesee...
Only because the locals do it this way in front of a "Biker Bar" owned by a Biker ~ The Tullahoma mayor told me "park with the Bikes on the sidewalk" thats the way we do it here...
One other time was at a shopping center with storefront remodeling in process with NO work going on and away from the stores with businesses in them...
I try not do anything that might stir up trouble with the Anti-motorcycle population...

When I worked on base in NAS JRB Willow Grove, PA We had designated parking spots and the other guy in my office drove a little Toyota Matrix so I would park in the front of the spot sideways so he could get in there since we only had 2 spots for our office and 3 regular people and then our other pilots would come by. If you couldn't get in our designated spots you had to park in a different parking lot across the street and up the hill.

I always park my bike in a normal parking spot, just like i Would with my car. I would not feel right pulling into a spot with ability don't personally know. My own personal view is that bikers that park on sidewalks are inconsiderate. Be it a business, house, or city street it's just plane rude.

My neighbor puts his sport bike in the middle of the sidewalk and it just pisses me off. Why not just park on the street, or in the driveway?

I used to keep one of my bikes on the front porch on a house I rented. One of my friends keeps his in the living room of his apartment.

One of my buddies back in the day kept a 1-lung Triumph in his kitchen.

A word about the cross-hatch next to a handicap space: This could be designed for the hydraulic power-chair lift on the inside of the van. I've seen a number of cars who thought the cross-hatch was theirs drive away with major damage because they were parked too close to the lift, which was clearly labeled with the distance it required.

I wouldn't park anything i wanted to keep nice in the cross hatch next to a handicap spot.

(P.S.The shag wagon does not have a chair lift ... yet. :? )

Just recently I went to a Swap Meet and parked my bike where I always do, across the street at the concrete mixing company (they allow this) and was surprised to see at least a dozen bikes parked on the sidewalk outside the entrance of the building.
I asked one of the ticket takers if this was OK, and they replied "I don't see anything wrong with it.".

I asked my son who works at a very large national retailer and he said Motorcycles park near where the bicycles are racked. He said "two wheels are two wheels".

I'm not a dick and I don't care what other bikers say on the issue. In my 35 years of riding I have only been hassled once for parking on a "sidewalk" and I promptly moved.
If some other bike pulls next to me in a space, or on a sidewalk, as long as they leave me enough room to move and don't damage my bike, I'd smile if I saw them.
Again, I'm not a dick about riding or parking.

I agree and ride that way....Two wheels is two wheels. One has a motor..

I park on Shopping building sidewalks. I am 6 feet from the door where i work and at Costco, Home depot, Walmart, Best Buy, Food Stores I park near the door out of the way on the sidewalk. No one has EVER said a thing. I won't park in a stall because if you pull in too deep a car will pull in and hit the bike before they realize its there. People are less likely to take any gear I leave on the bike where their is a lot of foot traffic.

I don't care what John Q public thinks. I will defer to an official from the store. But they don't seem to mind and this area being a bike mecca I think they would rather that than taking up a close stall. I leave my gloves and any gear on the bike seat when its cold and never lost anything.

I don't park on street sidewalks. Only those places near store entrances and in places out of a normal walking path. Where most of the other bikes park. Even the Mall where I work allows me to ride 200 feet of sidewalk and park where the bike rack is. I will also park on those hatch edge of handicapped space where there is no possible interference with any special vehicle enter or exit points. ANYTHING to stay out of a stall. People around here are used to seeing bikes parked up near buildings where they shop.

Around here that cross-hatch spot next to the HC spot IS part of the HC spot. Anything parked there would get a ticket or towed.

Well, it's really up to chance here. The ticket taker is not the property owner, so I wouldn't rely on his/her take on it. And two wheels are two wheels? Yes, except when there's a certain size engine and license plate which place the two-wheeler in the same category as a licensed motor vehicle expected to obey all the same traffic laws as those with more wheels. ... Me? I wouldn't chance it. But if you've had luck with it, more power to ya!

Now, Canyon - Dude, we share the same views, I only wish I could be as blunt as you bro!
I think some states require bicycles to be licensed....and dogs!!!!

I view it this way. In Las Vegas casinos had Motorcycle Parking, some places have Motorcycle parking here as well Like Broadway at the Beach. If Costco and other retailers and the Mall especially, was so concerned about bikes parking in non designated areas, rather than lose a customer they could paint some stripes for bikes or do as they do and leave us alone.

Down here in Georgia I always park in the hashed lines that go around light poles. I won't park in the handicapped ones though.

A few weeks ago I attended a Motorcycle Police Rodeo in Coppell, Texas. It was at a large City Park Complex that had several soccer fields. The parking lots were all full because of soccer games going on and the fact that some of the parking lots were being used for the rodeo. There were a lot of bikes and a lot of cars. With parking spots being at a premium when I finally found one I tried to leave room for another bike to park in the same stall with me. When I returned there was a car squeezed in there with my bike! You try and do good and it don’t always work out.

And you'll have a present from me if you ever do that to me. If I didn't ride up with you, you better not be parking with me. I've been boxed in by dumbasses like you and they pay for it.

Same deal with taking up my lane. I don't care if my bike is 2 feet wide. My lane is just that, MY lane. Unless I know you, stay out. Don't pull up next to me at a red light and then think your using that as a passing point.

I know I sound like an @sshole here but I've had my share of jackwagons F up getting on or off their bike in a stall with me and I've come back to new scratches and even a dent once. If I have to share the road with bicyclist and treat them like cars, you can treat me like one too and find your own stall.

i agree with ya bud. i don't park with bikes i don't know in the same spot. i wouldn't like it if people did that with my bike, so i don't do it to their's. i don't like it when someone i don't know pulls up beside me at a stop light. the main reason is because you don't know how these guys ride. things can get dangerous really quick.

i don't park on side walks either. i don't feel like i should have special privileges to park closer to the building just because i have a motorcycle.

Parking at the Mall

EXACTLY! It isn't about 'special privileges', it isn't about paying taxes or registration. IMO, this pic is when it's acceptable. You see the size of that sidewalk.
And as for a sidewalk being only for walking... don't let your kids ride bikes on it, or skateboard...

I don't park on side walks or in a stall with someone's bike that don't know. That's just me, I was riding with a friend and some friends of his and they didn't like the fact that I went and found a stall to park in while the were on the sidewalk outside of a resturant.
