Hello new member. Just bought a 09 shadow spirit vt750. The owner didn't drive it much. I took it for test drive and bought it. I transported the bike 300 miles. When I brought it home and hit the start button it shot out a steam of gas on the bottom on the petcock. Which it didn't to before. Do you think it's the petcock or a stuck float
Thank you

Unfamiliar with the 09 >
I think I`d suspect that petcock...
BUT
I`d Check oil level to see IF there`s Gas in the Crankcase,
Dennis
We Got busy with "Other things" and I did Not ride as planned...

I I did NOT Procrastinate, I simply prioritized Farm work into the schedule...

Although I CAN & Do Pro-crastinate,
Dennis

That one has a vacuum operated auto-shutoff petcock. They can go bad and allow fuel to run down the vacuum line into the intake, definitely check the oil level. People have bent connecting rods trying to crank one that is full of fuel. The piston coming up could have caused that vacuum line (item #9 below) to blow off the back of the petcock.

I'd look for a manual on-off-reserve petcock to replace it and ALWAYS shut the fuel off if stopping for more than a quick lunch. Make it a habit, turn key off and petcock off together and on together.

Edit: another possibility is the float needle is gummed up and stuck open after you rode it.

Or the fuel tank vent is blocked, hose pinched or a bug built a nest in the hose, and the fuel vapor pressure from a rough trailer ride forced fuel past the needle and flooded it

Chances are the 16 yr. old diaphragm in the petcock crumbled in 300 mi. Might as well service the tank while rebuilding the petcock. I always shut off the petcock manually regardless if its auto or manually operated especially the float needles leaking with age and failed petcock diaphram equals "hydrolocking" the motor as oldguy mentioned. Bike sitting is worse than riding as for keeping it right so to speak, we're here for support. Be sure to check for critters in the air filter.
