Any problems using Rain X on our plastic windshields? I bought the wipes today when I was at Auto Zone getting an oil filter for the bike, if it's not recommended for the bike shields then of course I'll just use it on the car! But sure would be nice watching the rain just run off the bike shield when I'm out riding in the rain.

Huge problems.
It'll smear and you'll never get it off. ;)

You can use it and take your chances but I wouldn't. It is bad for the plastic and in the long run you'll regret it -- but maybe you won't keep the bike or windshield long enough to care.

Get enough bugs smashed on the windshield and the Rain-X won't help, though. And this time of year, I seem to get more bugs on the windshield than rain.

AngryHatter,
Just curious......What's their complaint? I use Rain X on my cars with no problems; been using it for years on my car windshields.
I love it!!!!

I know you can't use it on plastics or non-glass windshields.
Although; when I had boat, they used to have a "Marine Rain-X" but I haven't seen it lately. I think they quit making the stuff!

+1

But....you have to follow the directions especially on the windshiled, and polish off the residual with a damp cloth.

cbjr,
Yeah, that's right.......otherwise it leaves a dull film that makes the glass look cloudy.

But after a few light coats (I usually wipe some on/off after every car wash) the stuff is amazing. You hardly ever have to use the wipers!

Well I just got (implying a sudden change) lazy and started buying the Rain-X washer fluid for my cars. It costs about the same, is a whole lot easier to apply and I can do so while driving. It isn't nearly as durable but I'll put up with that for the ease of applying.

There are several good products out designed for plastic windshields that will do the same job as Rain X. I have some back home but forgot the dang name of it. Someone will surely come up with a product name for you here. The product I use cleans it and also makes the surface slippery so rain ( and bugs ) slide right off. It also seemed to help a little with fogging. If I think of the name I will post it here.

Phil: I have used it for years and have no problem with it on the car and bus. There is a trick to applying it though and without going over your work a couple times will give you poor results. 2 to 3 applications at once I found is best.

I love the stuff for glass windshields. I put several layers on my bus once and we got caught in a pretty decent rain. I never had to turn on my windshield wipers to clear the windshield.

Good stuff,

Chris

Phil,

My experience and have heard the same from others is that it works fine
when you use it and keep using it.
Once you decide you don't want to use it any longer,
the windshield becomes almost uncleanable.
When you stop using it, about a week or two later, the windshield will
develop a hazy on it that nothing seems to take off.

I used it on a car a few years back and had that problem.
I tried everything known to man to remove the residue that it left.
I tried gasoline, brake cleaner, nitromethane, mineral spirits, etc..
I even tried polishing the windshield with windshield polish...
I ended up getting a rock crack in the windshield and had to have it replaced...
Since that, I've never used that product again.
It worked great while I used it, but if you stop, it will wreck havoc on
your windshield.

I tried it once, hated it. Never got my windsheild back to normal.

Finally got a rock crack too and got the glass replaced.

In a light rain the water does roll right off, but as soon as you need the wipers all it does is smear and you can't see a thing.

Maybe I used it wrong, but I like just plain clear glass and let the wipers do their job.

On my bike sheild I use Novus and paste car wax, keeps the scratches down and the water rolls off too. (Makes bug guts a bit easier to get off too.)

It smeared on a friends car and he couldn't get it off.
Upon further investigating he found a lot of people complaining about the tendancy to smear and make it harder to see.

If it was that bad I'm sure we'd hear a lot more noise.

Rain-X...... NO! Bad, very, very bad!

Plexus..... Yes! (Expensive, but great stuff)

Lemon Pledge wipes...... Yes! Works great!

No matter what you use.... clean your shields with up and down motion only!
