I don't mean to offend anyone who may have tassels on their bike by asking this question, but I am new to the street bike world and have a few questions.

I heard a while back that Tassels (fringes, whatever) were for girls bikes. Is this true?

I think some of those handlebar tassels would really compliment the look of my Spirit 750, but I'm not gonna get 'em if they for girls!

Anyone know the history of Tassles? Why they are installed(if there's a reason other than looks) etc...

Told ya it was a stupid question!

If someone told you toilet paper was just for girls....what would you do? The world of motorcycles is unisex...accessories in the catalogs and on the web aren't labeled "just for guys" or "just for girls"...only specific clothing only because of the size range. Do you own "thang", dude.

danimal,
In the world of "Bad Ass Bikers" we call 'em Studs, Conchos and Fringe!
Tassels are those things kids wear on their caps when they graduate from High School.

I think there's a couple of motorcycle clubs (AKA: gangs) down on 8-Mile in Detroit........I'd go knock on their door; ask them if thier tassels are for girls bikes and why do they have so many tassels on their Harley's, but if I did, they might kick my ass or worse, they might even shoot me, so I think I'll just pass on that idea!

Just take my word: Studs, Conchos and Fringe are not just for girls bikes!

Don't believe it !! Tassels (studs, fringe and conchos) are for whoever likes them on their ride. I am a man, army vet. and my bike is loaded with them. If you want them on your bike, go for it. You have plenty of company. It's your bike, so make it look like you want it to..Bob <><

They're not my cup of tea... but I don't think I'd say they are strictly for girls bikes.

For the most part, I don't care for them, but I have seen them on some
bikes that they look good.

It's just another dressing... some like chrome, some like leather, some like both.

Question for those who have them on (around) the grips.

Don't ya get whipped by them, while riding?
Yes, There was a pair on my first bike I bought and they stung the hell out of my arms. I didn't have to worry about them long though, my wife pulled the off my bike, as soon as I got off of it... she didn't like them very much LOL.

I've heard, if you buy a good pair, they are heavier and don't whip you while riding.

Thanks Yall! Thats the type of response I was looking for.

I'm gonna order some for the levers! I just didn't wanna be the only guy riding with em...lol

The toilet paper analogy was a lil far fetched!!! No one sees me use toilet paper....just like no one sees me when I run around the house wearing my girlfriend's unde......oops! was that aloud?

My son had some really long ones that attached to the brake and clutch levers. At highway speed the one on the brake lever would pull hard enough to activate his brake light. He finally shortened them up to about a foot and a half and it doesn't do it any more.

Bit of history:
Fringe was originally added to the seams of leather clothing to make it more water resistant. I guess the idea was that the strings of fringe would lead the water away from the seam. As there was no really waterproof leather back in the mountain man days, I guess it worked as well as anything else. Then again, my grandpa told me once that the fringe was made of rawhide, and that it would swell when wet, and seal the seams, so his theory was that the fringe was supposed to catch the water, so the layer of rawhide would swell faster. Either way, The fringe was not originally intended for "girl's bikes." (What IS a "girl's bike?")

Someone once told me a "Girl's Bike" is a 750ACE.

Yeah, now it all makes sense..........All this time I thought the girls are looking at "me" when I ride by on my 750ACE, but they aren't; they're actually looking at my girly bike because they want one. (((LOL)))

If you want tassels put them on. I am a little older than a lot of you so maybe I have a different opnion. We just had a Lady rider ride her wing 125.120 miles in one year to break the distance in a year record. I think they can get more confortable than we can. I also enjoy talking to them because they share more of the same interests I do. I would not ride a pink bike or wear a pink jacket but I do not think tassels are not a problem unless you are at a strip club. I might be wrong but from what I understand you are OK as long as you dont have a earing in your right ear, but I would not bet on that either.

Tassels, fringe, whatever...

I thought "tassels" were those things strippers used in their acts and I thought "fringe" was the edged of a piece of fabric that was starting to come apart (just joking!). I'm not sure what to call it but maybe "streamers" could be used? In any case, whatever you call it, tassels, streamers or fringe sometimes look good while other times it looks utterly ridiculous. For example, I wouldn't wear it in my hair or put it on my truck antenna, but I might use it to keep rocks from flying up or something like that.

I think everyone has pretty much said that it's your ride and you should do whatever you want to do. If you are thinking about impressing someone then that someone better be you! Otherwise, you are doing it for the wrong reasons.

If you have any desire to use or display "fringe" on your bike then go for it. Use it or don't use it. I don't think anyone (here) would disrespect you one way or another. I'm also sure everyone has their own opinion too, or else we would all be riding the exact same bike, have the same tattoo's (or no tattoo's), and even wear the same clothes! Now, how boring would that be?

And if you want to know about the origins of "fringe" I may be wrong but here's what I remember: "Fringe" originally appeared on the coats and pants of mountain men and other people (nearly all men) who trapped animals and took the pelts of beavers, wolves, bears, and so on. Back then a trapper used the fringe from his coat or pant to tie up the animal pelt which made it easier to transport. Of course the "mountain man" is now a bit of a symbol who is mostly associated as being strong, independent and very free to make his own choices in the world - does that sound familiar?! Can you now explain to the next dim-wit who tries to put you down for your choice to use fringe? I suspect that's what's really going on here - some idiot is trying to mess with your head. L8R...
