Ok....so there I was....ridin home one mornin from work .........and my two week old Mitzler decided the bolt on the road was cute enouph to get impregnated by it.... :( .

Well I am still learning (don't think there is going to ever be a stop with that in bike maintance) and this will be the first time I remove a tire from the bike (I HATE TRAILERING A BIKE to take it somewhere...Dont like being that nervious) I dont have one of those pieces of heavens...you know a Bike jack. Can anyone give me any hits on how to

First jack the bike up (where are the best places to place a hydrolic jack.)

Second where are the best places to put it on stands.....since it will be off the ground while I am yankin the tire off and waitin a few days to get the tire fixed and what not.

or Third..... any other better ideas than the road I am going on.

The worst part of it all.....I got the flat on day number one of a three day span of 80 degree afternoons in January.....great riding weather and I get to be a prisoner in my 4 wheel cage while the rest of the world rides   lol

As always thank all of yall for your time!!!!!!!

My dealer will come get my broke down bike if it's within a reasonable driving distance.. they would plug that sucker, and I'd have it back by 5:00 pm.....

I don't know how the rest of the world lives outside of my personal mecca...

(I would definitely try to salvage that tire if possible)

Wow...you do live in a Meca....Oh yea the 50-65 dollar repair vrs the 300+ tire replacement. Btw I like your quote.....Only time I drive that cage is when I am either pulling a trailer, bike is down, or well maybe if it is raining really hard when I go to leave the house.....maybe then. :D

This is why I love this site!

Holly Crap....when i saw that I had to laugh....such a simple Idea .....I have so much southern engenering blood in me I dont know why I didnt think about that....I will probably do the I hook idea as well.....That way I will have that warm fuzzy feeling!

WELL CRAAAP...I looked under the bike...that Idea would be great if I was taking the front tire off....but i dont think it will work for the rear tire.....Rectifier reg is in the way or the oil filter is in the way..or support for exahust is in the way...or the wood would be to far forward........CRAP!...next idea?

This isn't rocket science, go by a larin lift and adapter from Harbor Frieght and be done with it. Or get a little creative and spend $89 and buy a craftsman MC jack and make adaptors out of blocks to catch the frame of the bike - been there done all of it......

You can also winch the front of the bike up with a come-along and chain around a ceiling joist in your garage (if so equipped).

A regular floor jack and some length of board has been done too.

No such thing as a $300 tire change unless you are putting 300 series on your bike or are just plain helpless.

The jack will pay for itself in about 2 or 3 tire changes, a HF tire changer will pay for itself in about 3 or 4 tire changes- again been there doing that.......

It's all about how much you want to save money and/or how much your free time is worth.

Well for those of us that money is an issue...going out and buying an 89 dollar jack is still a bit out of the price range......even if it will pay for itself..you still have to buy it first. The jack with some length of board...yea I can do that...I am looking for other ideas...isn't that why this site is here?????....so we don’t, as individuals, have to recreate the wheel.

300 Outrageous??? When was the last time you bought a Mitzler for a shadow and had it installed......down where I am from....that is the price.

This would be the first time I was belittled and disrespected on this forum.

I paid less than $150 for each Metzeler including installation... for my 750 Shadow. $300 sounds more like for "2" tires, not one.

Call around-- you might can find someone cheaper.... or order off line and I think Cycle Gear can install.

I am not belittling or disrespecting just pointing out options that work and save money. You sound like you are ready to give it a try, I respect that.

Last time I replace a metzler was two years ago, $136 for a Metzeler 880, for the tire at an independent shop , carried in the wheel and old tire, $22 for the mount and balance (never paid more than $40 at a full fledged MC dealer for a mount and balance - carried in with a tire from SWmoto). Either way still < $180 for a rear tire.

I live in the DC metro area, one of the most expensive place to live in the U.S. Almost everything is overpriced.

Here is a link to a dealer that offers good prices with a good reputation, if you buy two tires shipping is free I've purchased at least 10 tires from them-no problems. If you shop their specials you can save a bundle sometimes - Metzeler usually has a big sale in March/April when they have their tire show deals. Not sure about this years but I have hit hit the sales in the past.

Granted the tire prices are $20 more than the last time I purchased a tire, but it's still in the $200 range if you carry your own wheel in.....pays for a jack in short order especially if you are paying $300 for a rear tire change.

You just have to modify it to fit your particular machine. Ablock of woood here, there and some carpet. After you pull your rear axle out, the loss of weight on the rear will make the front end drop. Trust me, it works. Cheap is good!

Cbjr: I apologize for the statement...but let me explain why I took your comment the way I did

Well looks like the three shops around me are screwing it to the city. Between the three I went to the cheapest for.....new tire, new tube, installation (at that time I didn’t have the time to do it...work was taking too much of my free time ) mount and balance all left me about 315 in the whole. THAT WAS THE CHEAPEST....I looked online....not as completely as I should have....as I now know. I still saw prices for the tire at 225 and 218..or the base price was 175 plus a 30 shipping and handling..The MC shop I went to charged me 225 and they (the 2 cheaper ones) charged 10-20 more for the mount and balance if you brought in a tire (they stated they were giving a discount to customers who bought the tires from them....I know its bs....but what you do??) so I thought well fine I will buy from them. The next to the closest MC shop is at least an 80mile round trip.....well I didn’t bother calling them due to the cost of Fuel.......Honestly due to the MC shops here.....that is why I decided to work on my own bike.....I knew they were high....I just didn’t relies how bad they were doing us. Thank you for the web sites......I did some further searching and found several places that were along the same price line....don’t know why I didn’t see them before.....I guess when I hit those first 3 I ASSuMEd that the rest would be that way......oh well.

Far as jacking the bike up....I had thought of a few ways...I was just wanting to read of some ways that had already been proven...and when you stated it wasn't rocket science...that was beside the point.....I came up with a few Ideas but like I said I wanted to see what has already been proven in case I had a bad idea and didn’t know it till the bike fell over......I didn’t suggest anything due to the fact a completely open question leaves room for ideas outside of the box.

liv4fishin:
I didn’t relies ...makes since....but didn’t relies how much weight the rear tire and wheel would be.....with that knowledge...the 4X8 idea should work like a charm!...Thanks again!

AAAHHHH - poor baby, can't ride for a whole 3 days

My last ride was on 1 Nov 08 and it doesn't look like I'll be able to ride at least for another 2.5 months yet. Thanks to old man winter

My bike sits in my garage all covered up and I can hardly remember what it looks like. I don't want to uncover it and look at it because the tears will begin to flow.....

Happy Winter

Hate to be a poor *******. Picture this: Tree in the backyard, remove my sissybar pad, and a heavy duty ratchet strap. Hasn't failed me yet. Just loop it under your bars to replace the leaky fork seal the previous owner just shoved some paper towel into. Also, it's not going anywhere. Won't have to worry about it falling over. Well, shouldn't. . .

Sasquatch: You misunderstood.....we just had 3 days of nice weather ....and on the morning of the first one I got the flat....and I wont be able to get the tire fixed till next week....so I missed the days sucked lol.....I still ride in the winter sleet and rain...just not as fun...

Just_Me69:Now that was the out side the box thinking I was thinking of!
