Hey guys, any help here would be greatly appreciated. My 85 vt1100 jumped out of 5th gear into 4th at about 70 on freeway. When i treid to go back into 5th, i found the shifter to be rock solid. I checked out the linkage, etc on the externals, all ok. Can i open up the right c/c cover to check out the shifter parts? Dont know if something broke, or what. Not looking forward to having to split the cases. Please someone help???

I'm not totally familiar with The problem. But I do know the 85-86 Vt are notorios for jumping out or 3-4 gear . Because of a weak shift fork. You'll most likely have to open it up. Jumping out of gear must have bent or broke something. Have a good manual handy. Be curios to know what piled up hope its not to serious.

I've got issues with my 4th gear jumping and landing between 3rd and 4th. I have been shifting, under hard acceleration, from 3rd to 5th. It'll maintain 4th gear as long as I don't accelerate hard. As for your issue, sounds like something broke or came loose inside. Your best bet is to get yourself an Official Honda Shop Manual and start tearing into it. Barring that, you'll probably need to take it to a shop. Good luck and let us know what you find.

It sounds to me like the shifter fork broke. It is the part on the left side of the shift shaft that mates with the fork on the right end of the shaft that you step on to change gears. It can be seen by removing the left side engine cover. It just has to be pulled out and rewelded.
