Bent jet needle

Was just curious if this is a normal thing, I was checking some stuff out about a buddies bike were trying to get running and remembered when I did my carbs that the jet needle seemed bent. When I went to put it back in I had to twist it around quite a bit until the end was in a spot that it would go into the needle jet hole. If I remember correctly, which I might not be, I may have had to coax one in with my finger, I just cant remember if I DID that, or thought about doing it until I got it in by twisting it around. Should it basically fit right in the middle of the bore without having to twist it?

If its bad like that, what kind of running issues could it cause because I still have some bogging issues when I give the throttle a quick twist.

It should run in the center of the main jet or it will drag and cause running problems. Also it will wear the side off the needle and cause a change in the mixture.

Not sure if this applies, or is relevant, but if the jets are the slotted type, what's to say that the clip is exactly straight on the jet? I know there's a spring inside to help hold the jet, but if that little clip isn't perfect, it could make for quite a difference down at the end of a fairly long jet needle (relatively speaking).

I might suggest taking the jet and rolling it on an extremely flat surface, like a sheet of glass, to make sure that you actually do have a problem.

My .o2 (change will be offered on a first-come, first served basis. :grin2:

Are they Keihin or Mikuni carbs on that bike? I would think Keihin, but always good to check as there were reportedly Ascots with the same basic engine that could show up with either.
If it doesn't pass the roll on a sheet of glass test, you may find a number on the fatter portion of the needle that would enable you to try for a match or close to it from a carburetor parts supplier handling that brand of carbs. You might need a magnifying glass to see the number.

30 odd years out I think looking in the Honda Parts System for a replacement would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, if you can find a Honda Dealership that has been in business that long with old people in their parts department, they may go "Oh yeah, this is what you want, same as the XR250" or something like that.

If the needle has been like that long as others have suggested it may have worn the needle jet oval and you will be jumping through the same hoops to find those.
The main jet should be fine.

Good luck!

Ha, I was actually just looking at those and found a set of needles with keepers. As mentioned in an earlier post Im going to pull my carbs tomorrow and check the needles to make sure its actually bent or if it was gunk in the keepers or something. When I cleaned them I never took them apart
