How to clean up after an oil change with the wrong oil?

I wish I'd read the oil-ology thread first...

I changed my83 VT750 oil with Mobile1 Synthetic which is a energy conserving oil. Woops! Now my clutch slips during hard acceleration.

I'm going to change the oil again soon.

My question is will changing the oil be enough? Is there anything I need to do to ensure all the molybdenum is gone?

Thanks!

I would just change the oil if you think it has caused clutch slip. You may be able to use in in another vehicle (car lawnmower etc) so its not a throwaway.

I would not put Seafoam:
40%-60% Pale Oil (mineral oil)
25%-35% Naphtha
10%-20% Isopropyl Alcohol

in an oil tank.

lol! You must have gotten us confused with the Air Conditioning forum?

Actually, in the old days (before the EPA) many production facilities used refrigerant R-11 to clean machinery. It's the perfect cleaner because it has a boiling point at about 70 degrees. It stays in its liquid state long enough to carry away oil and grime and then quickly boils off leaving no residue.......

Funny thing; it used to be perfectly legal to use R-11 as a cleaner, but illegal to vent it if it was in a refrigeration system.

Water in the crankcase? I think that's a BAD idea. Besides, I don't think water is going to just wash the oil off, especially synthetic. The synthetic is supposed to coat all the parts so it might be a couple of oil changes before the clutch is right again. If you really want the synthetic off in one go, You'll probably have to pull the plates and such out and do it by hand. I'm no expert but that's my thought. Best of luck!

There is a lot of myth about oils and I believe the "don't use EC oils" is part of the myths, however it would be interesting to find out if under the same acceleration, the oil change solved your clutch slip. BTW the Mobil 1 will not cause any clutch damage, however most of the suggestions as to cleaning it out (other than dismantle that I don't believe is necessary) may cause permanent damage.

You believe wrong dear sir. It's no myth it's a fact! Most 10-40w oils (which Honda reccommends) are not Energy Conserving. As far as cleaning your engine out the EC oil, change to a cheap CORRECT oil and substitute say 1/2 quart of automatic transmission fliud when refilling and put a 100 mi. or so on it and change to a correct oil of your choice. ATF is highly detergent oil and is safe to use in your engine. Also Marvel Mystery oil is good also. BTW there are so many types of Mobil 1 it's downright confusing. I have stop and observe closely for our Suzuki AWD when I go to purchase it. Mobil 1 does make motorcycle specific oils.

Update:

I changed the oil on Saturday. Let it drain for 30 minutes, put a new filter on and added Shell Rotella and about 7 ounces of seafoam.

It seems to have resolved the problem! Yay. But I haven't tested it to my satisfaction. I have only done some very short in town rides where speed never goes over 30mph. In those short runs I have hammered the throttle and no slipping! The real test is cruising at 55mph in 4th gear and twist the throttle all the way on. But I'm optimistic.

Thanks!
