I was just wondering if there is some unwritten rule that bikers and motocops not recognize each other? Or is it just in my area?

And about those loud pipes. I can always here when the motocops are driving by my office. They are as loud as my cobra's.

"Unwritten rules" are as varied as personalities. Some motorcycle riders won't wave to moped riders. Some sportbike riders won't wave at cruiser riders (and vice versa). Some riders of customs won't wave at riders of stock motorcycles. Some HOG riders won't wave at any non-HOG, and the list goes on forever.

Personality is a big part of it. A generally friendly guy is happy to get a wave from anyone and will wave back. There is usually a reason (sometimes a good one) for giving the cold shoulder. A rider who paid $20,000 for 1550 coveted cc's, and who looks like he's right out of 'BadAss Bikers' magazine may look down on a guy on a $4,000 600cc Honda cruiser wearing a fullface helmet that doesn't even match the bike. Or not...

People who invest more (time, money, whatever) in something usually expect some exclusivity that seperates them from the crowd, otherwise there's no point.

A motocop who has had extensive training may look down on other riders as inferior riders (which they likely are)... or he may simply not want to give an impression that he is fraternizing. Maybe he's worried that other motorists will see a friendly gesture toward another motorcyclist as 'favoratism' or whatever.

CHP wave to me first as much as i wave at them first. The only time they dont wave is when they are either busy talking on their radio or turning around to give me a ticket:)

Id say most of the time moto cops will wave (either wave first, or wave back) I've had a few that gave me Death Stares for it, and one that complimented me on my bike (jack knifed rig shut down the freeway and he was directing traffic, had compliments from 4 officers that day...)

I tend to get more waves from cops when I'm riding with my buddy, especially at a light, as we're normally laughing and carrying on, seems to relax the moto cop

we don't have many motocops here, but the cage-bound cops tend to give a little wave or head-nod as long as you're not doing something stupid.

Of course, quite a few of them ride when not on duty, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I split lanes here in Los Angeles, but not as fast as other riders ... including the motorcycle cops. If I'm in between lanes and see them catching up to me, I move over to the next safe available gap in the traffic and wave them on. They have always waved as they pass. One cop pulled even with me, gave a little honk and a "thumbs up" before sailing past. :D

I wave or I nod to other riders or motormen and cops in cages.

Most times I am going too fast to see if they return my friendly gesture.

But those that I have observed in Fl are the young riders who wave before I wave. It must be that I am more ancient of days.

Most bikers look at me funny when I wave to them from my patrol cage. I wave to everyone when I am riding as long as I feel comfortable taking my hand off the bar, otherwise I at least give a head nod.

I did have a couple Harley guys laugh at me on my 83 one day, as they were flying past me at about 80 in a 55. Where are the dang cops when you need them.

What?! Assuming you have the ability to pull them over (diff rules here?) that would have made the best story in the history of the forum! haha a off-duty cop on a "beater" '83 chasing down and ticketing a whole patrol of HD's!! too good!
