Smoking Cigs while riding

For those who smoke, do you smoke while riding??

I ask because I pulled up to a stop light to go right and there was another rider going straight. Before turning right on red I gave him a quick nod and "wassup" and he was trying to get a cig lit through his FULL-FACED helmet.

Now my first thought was how inconvenient but it quickly digressed into a "Simpson's" moment. I could just picture the wind blowing the hot coal loose right into his eye or a car pulling out and him swallowing the cig.

I had to chuckle.

So those who wear helmets smoke cigarettes even though far more die from smoking caused illness then head injuries.

Does anyone else see the issue here?

Given a choice I would rather not smoke then wear a helmet. The odds are better for a longer life.

Don't smoke. and wear a helmet it makes you look very undecided about your life and especially your logic.

Many years ago when I used to smoke I had an 85 700 Magna. I don't recall the brand of windshield but the air was so still behind it that I had to stick the cigarette our into the wind stream to get the ash off of it. I didn't wear a full face but had no trouble smoking with my 3/4 helmet.

OK, a point well taken. Except loose the smokes not the helmet.

I don't smoke, but one of the guys I ride with does. He wears a baseball cap while riding instead of a helmet and has a tendency to not only light up while at a stop light, but also while in motion taking his hands off the bars. Over the weekend we all rode up to the Leesburg Bikefest in Central Florida. While on the turnpike stuck in traffic he decides he wants a cigarette. He fumbles with the pack, drops it on the road and proceeds to bend over on the bike to pick it up while the traffic in front of him starts moving. The rest of our group is staring at him as if to say WTF? Needless to say, he couldn't pick up the pack and we had to take off.

Paulie, Paulie. Loose the smokes AND wear the helmet. There's a person who has a healthy aversion to risk AND is consistent!

Those who smoke And wear a helmet are confused. But hey Kamikaze pilots wore helmets but did not smoke. Such is the human condition.

Smoke and go helmet free. Live hard die young. Leave a good looking corpse (except if you did a face first get off) .

Do I sense an attempt to start an argument?

Nah Just bustin Paulie.

I don't smoke because there is far more evidence out there that proves beyond a doubt it is extremely harmful to the body on many levels. And it's an addiction many have beaten through shear will power. Been there.

I just don't understand someone riding a bike with a full face helmet in a no helmet state AND smoking......and even smoking WHILE riding at that?

I smoke, and I find it incredible that anyone can take their eyes and concentration off the traffic long enough to get one lit. WTF? That's just nuts... Wonder how that's done with a full face helmet on? Stickin' out the visor perhaps? :?

I'm so busy concentrating on the ride that I completely forget about smoking. So I guess you could say riding's made me healthier! hehehe

...hhmm.. except for the plate of hotwings I had yesterday. Oh, and the chips and salsa... oh yeah, and the onion rings too.

Bar food is my weakness...

If we are REALLY concerned about public health and safety issues.... and I mean REALLY concerned - let's get rid of automobiles. They kill more than cigs every year. But we probably don't want to do that ... because YOU want YOUR car... right?

Jeeezzz ... we wouldn't have won the damn war without Lucky Strikes. Stop being "culturally trendy" and let it go ... there's enough real crap to worry with. You probably don't go to Bar-B-Ques either ... cause that too after all is ... 2nd hand smoke. by-product of combustion, ya know.

I love it when "logic" is stretched beyond reason to in an attempt to validate the ridiculous.

Spoken like someone who truly cannot quit doing something that has absolutely no real or imagined benefit on any level to one's existence and livelihood ( ahem like a car). Surely you cannot put the need for a car on the same level as the need for a cigarette? I would say the risk/reward ration is very wide between the two examples. Wouldn't you?

(Well I guess one who becomes addicted to anything can come up with some hyperbolic rationalizations to justify their weakness) Like Barbecues vs Smoking cigarettes. And Lucky Strikes saves the world.......WOW.

I accept being "Culturally trendy" to be against something that provides no benefit to the user and certainly not to those in near proximity.

I will accept being "Culturally trendy" to abhor the incessant littering of those who casually throw and sometimes crush spent filters on the ground as if its "not really littering." or worse out of cage windows while driving because even they cannot stand their own stink of ashtray butts.

I would say we need more of that kind of trend and less prewashed torn $80 jeans.

Those of us over 45 who started smoking before all the dangers were revealed have somewhat an excuse for having started. Those who KNOW the indisputable science today and STILL smoke. I just don't get it. $100 plus a month for what benefit? I don't want to smell your cigarette smoke any more then you want to smell my fart in an elevator. Its not all about health.

Hondaguy.

Why would you give a rats ass if anyone smokes ? If they do not smoke in front of you, blow smoke in your face or light up in your house or car, what bother is it to you ?
In as far as smoking while riding, it probably isn't the brightest thing to do. :)

Well, I don't know how to tell you this, but; I have been smoking since I was 11. I'm 58 now, and I wear a helmet soooooo.... yes. I'm an idiot.

Thats the biggest problem with our society today. We have to many bleeding heart liberals that want to legislate and enact laws according to their beliefs and to force their beliefs and lifestyles on others. I say live your own life and do not worry about your neighbor out watering his lawn in the buff at 3 am. :)
Chris
Chistopher,
Amid our current political and religous climate, I'm sure you could make the same accusation against other groups beyond "Liberals" but this is not the forum for that nor should it be.

At least your neighbor waits until 3:00am to come out in the buff!

As for the original intent of my post, I was just making an observation that either the guy is really talented or really lucky. :D

That is very true and I do apologize. Since this is your thread I went back and removed the political statements I made. But it wont change my mind in regards to living ones own life and not worrying about what the other guy is doing. :)

Incidentally, my stance still has not changed. Unless you have a windshield, its a bit risky to light up and smoke while riding. Hot ashes in the eyes is never a fun thing to experience. But then whoever wants to smoke and ride at the same time, thats their prerogative. Light em up for all I care. :)

Chris

P.S. I have always found that the best time to water the lawn is 3 AM. :)

Ah Paulie. You are an enigma indeed!

AS for live and let live. I will agree to that if I never again read a diss on a cell user in a cage!!!

I smoke and ride. I usually light up right before i go to leave and finish it down the road (they tend to burn REAL quick in 35 mph winds lol). I just cup it in my hand so theres not direct wind on it and off i go. I rarely light up at a stop light or anything like that, the light turns green too quick

Going on the patch soon to quit.....just gotta figure out how to light those things
