My bike's battery recently died; and I'm trying to figure out the cause. I am a fairly new rider so it is a possibility that I left my killswitch to the on position; although I don't believe that is why.

I bought a battery trickler (1.5amp charger) and charged it for about 8 hours. After I took the battery off, it still read that the battery wasn't fully charged.

Although after I put the battery back into the bike, everything functioned fine, and the bike roared to life with ease. Is it possible that the cold could have any effect on the battery?

It has been raining and storming quite a lot here. While at work, my motorcycle was stuck outside in the storm, which makes me cringe. Could this be the root of my problem?

I don't have a garage to store my bike in, so lately I've been putting it under my apartment staircase.

Your kill switch has nothing to do with power loss from the battery unless you shut the bike down with it and forget to turn the key off. They stress using the kill switch in classes to get you used to it so that it is second nature in case of an emergency. I rode for about 20 years before I ever saw a bike with a kill switch.
The best practice in my opinion is to shut the bike off with the key so you don't come out from a stop and find the battery dead. Also less chance of forgetting the key and offering someone a test ride.
As for the trickle charger, if your battery was dead or allmost dead it will take at least 24 hours for a full charge. When the green LED comes on the battery is charged. for storage you should be using a charger/maintainer.
